2011 Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress
Tuesday 24th - Thursday- 26th May 2011
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists 2011 Congress will be held at The International Convention Centre, Broad Street, Birmingham.

Exhibition details and Application Form to Exhibit will be available in the Members area in November 2010.

Congress 2010 - The Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress, Liverpool 2010
Tuesday 25th - Thursday 27th May 2010
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists held its Annual Congress 2010 at the ACC, Liverpool. The scientific programme was packed with sessions that appealed to everyone, with integrated sessions aimed at all abilities.

The first Retina Day to be held at Congress was a great success.

Congress 2010 - Exhibition
The 2010 Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress took place at the Liverpool ACC. A tour of the commercial exhibition by the President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, MR. John Lee, FRCS, FRCOphth took place on Tuesday 25 May 2010.

We would like to extend our thanks to all the companies who exhibited and provided such a splendid exhibition for the delegates to visit.

A Drinks Reception, sponsored by OPTIC UK, for delegates and exhibitors was well attended in the exhibition hall and the Al Gurr Trio provided the music.

Congress 2010 - Exhibition Prize
A prize shield is awarded to the best stand at Congress. The shield commemorates the work of Desmond Wright who was Exhibition Director of Optic UK from 1984 until 1993. Stands are judged in terms of equipment shown, supporting literature and the presentation of items displayed by the staff.
 
We are pleased to announce that the year the shield was awarded to Carl Zeiss.

 

Congress 2010 - 2nd OPTIC (UK) Lecture
The OPTIC (UK) Lecturer for the 2010 was given by  Professor Robert N Frank MD PhD who received his degree at Harvard College, followed by his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine in 1966.

Mr.Michael Bench, Chairman of OPTIC UK thanked Professor Frank on behalf of the Royal College and OPTIC UK and presented him with a memento of the occasion

2010 - OPTIC (UK) Drinks Reception
OPTIC (UK) extend a warm welcome to Congress speakers and delegates and invite them to a drinks reception in the exhibition Hall 2 on Tuesday 25th May 2010 from 5.15pm to 6.15pm. Drinks and canapés will be served with live music and guests are encouraged to meet the exhibitors.


ProfessorFranksSmallCongress 2010 - OPTIC (UK) Lecture
The OPTIC (UK) Lecturer for the 2010 event has been confirmed as Professor Robert N Frank MD PhD who
received his degree at Harvard College, followed by his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine in 1966.

He joined the staff of the US National Eye Institute before finally moving to Kresge Eye Institute and achieving full professorial rank in 1980. He is currently the Professor of Ophthalmology and Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology and a member of Wayne State’s Academy of Scholars.

Professor Frank has authored 130 publications, has been Editor-in-Chief of Current Eye Research and, from 2003-2008 Editor-in-Chief of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, on whose editorial board he remains. He received the Alcon Research Institute Award in 1992 and the Paul Henkind Memorial Lectureship Award from the Macula Society in 2005.

His major area of expertise is diseases of the retina and of retinal and choroidal blood vessels, including in particular diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

The 2009 Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress took place at the ICC Birmingham, 19-21 May.
A tour of the commercial exhibition by the President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Miss Brenda Billington, FRCS, FRCOphth took place on Tuesday 19 May 2009.

OPTIC (UK) Members held a drinks reception for Congress delegates and exhibitors in the exhibition on Tuesday 19 May 2009 which was well attended.

The 2010 Annual Congress of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists will take place at the new Arena and Conference Centre (ACC) Liverpool 25-27 May. Exhibition details are now being circulated.

Congress 2009 - Best Stand Award
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists award a prize, a shield, to the best stand at Congress. The shield commemorates the work of the late Desmond Wright who was Exhibition Director of OPTIC (UK) from 1984 until 1993.

The winning company is able to keep the shield for one year.

Stands are judged in terms of equipment shown, supporting literature and the presentation of items displayed by the staff.

The award is judged on the following criteria -

- All commercial companies exhibiting at the Annual congress are eligible to enter.
- The judges will not take into consideration the size or elaborate decoration of the stand.
- Stands are judged in terms of equipment shown, supporting literature and the presentation of items displayed by the staff.
- Staff will be expected to be present on the stand during the judging and should be able to demonstrate or describe the use of equipment on show.

We are pleased to announce that the shield was awarded to Spectrum in 2009.

ProfessorSommerSmallCongress 2009 - First OPTIC (UK) Lecture
The inaugural OPTIC (UK) Lecture was delivered by Professor Alfred Sommer MD MHS who is Dean Emeritus and Professor of Epidemiology, Ophthalmology, and International Health at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Professor Sommer has published 5 books, over 300 scientific articles and has received numerous awards including the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Research, the Warren Aplert Foundation Prize and the Duke Elder International Gold Medal for contributions to Ophthalmology.

His research interests currently include child survival, blindness prevention and the interface between public health and clinical medicine.
